Jazz
About this style
Jazz is a dance style that evolved in the United States in the middle of the twentieth century, along with the development and popularization of jazz music. The style has two substyles, which are vernacular jazz and dramatic jazz. Vernacular jazz dance is the one that most people associate with jazz. It usually involves ragtime moves, as well as has such subgenres as Lindy hop, Charleston, and mambo. This substyle was often danced by regular people at parties. The brightest representatives of vernacular jazz are The Whitman Sisters and Florence Mills. At the same time, dramatic jazz is performed on stage and mostly by professional dancers. The most famous dancers who worked in this substyle include Jack Cole, Eugene Louis Faccuito, and Bob Fosse.
Today, jazz is not casually performed at parties, yet it is still rather popular all around the globe. Multiple dance studios offer jazz lessons for kids, adult enthusiasts, and pros. Additionally, it is often used in theatrical performances, media, and movies. So if you feel like jazz dance is your style, go ahead and give it a try.
